I reached into my pocket and touched the edge of the ultrasound picture. For one desperate moment I considered pulling it out — placing it in his hand, watching the suspicion dissolve.

But a colder thought stopped me. If he could look at harmless photographs and condemn me without a conversation, what would happen the next time someone whispered in his ear?
