“I was pregnant,” I said. “I had an ultrasound picture in my pocket. I came home to tell you.”

His breath caught. “Maya.”

“I stood in front of you waiting for you to ask one honest question. You didn’t.”

He lowered his head. “I’m sorry.” No explanations. No demand that I accept it. That made it harder.

“You need the tests,” I said, standing.

“What happens after? After today.”
