A little girl, perhaps seven years old, walked away from the railing.
She was the daughter of a petty officer I had physically carried out of a smoke-filled, collapsing corridor five years earlier.
She approached me holding a single white rose she’d saved from the wreath.
She held it out to me.
Her eyes were bright and serious.
“Thank you for bringing my dad’s truth home, Captain,” she said softly.
