The Philistines, in particular, appear in the biblical record as having iron technology that the early Israelites did not: in 1 Samuel 13:19-22, the text notes that there were no smiths in Israel and that the Israelites had to go to the Philistines to sharpen their tools, because “the Philistines had said, ‘Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears.'” This has been interpreted as evidence of Philistine superiority in iron technology.

The archaeological evidence from Philistine sites does show iron objects appearing in the early Iron Age levels — consistent with the biblical account.

Whether this reflects a genuine Philistine technological advantage or simply the generally earlier adoption of iron technology in coastal areas with better access to trade and technological information is debated.

The broader transition from Bronze to Iron Age technology is not a simple story of one metal replacing another.

Iron and bronze coexisted for centuries; iron became dominant gradually.
