It is not found in Hittite art.

It appears in Egyptian depictions of specific Sea Peoples groups — particularly the Peleset and the Tjeker — but not in the art of the Bronze Age cultures from which those groups are assumed to have come.

Several explanations have been proposed.

One is that the headdress was made of feathers and therefore would not survive archaeologically — so its absence from the material record of the Aegean does not prove it did not exist there.

Another is that the headdress was a specifically martial decoration worn only in combat contexts, and therefore would not appear in the domestic and ceremonial art that survives from Aegean sites.
