One of the most poignant aspects of the Sea Peoples story is the survival of a set of documents from the city of Ugarit that appear to describe its final moments before destruction.

Ugarit was one of the great trading cities of the Late Bronze Age — a cosmopolitan port on the Syrian coast that served as a hub for the trade that flowed between Egypt, Canaan, Cyprus, the Hittite empire, and the Aegean.

The city’s archives, discovered in excavations beginning in 1929, have yielded thousands of clay tablets in multiple languages and scripts, preserving diplomatic correspondence, commercial records, mythological texts, and administrative documents.
