The Secret Place
There was a short corridor with a mop and a coat hook, and then a doorway into the room, and I stood in that doorway for perhaps two seconds before anybody looked up.

She was standing at a counter with a kettle and she made a sound — not a scream, a sort of intake — and put her hand flat on the counter.
Gerald Rask looked up from the table with an expression I could not read at all and then, extraordinarily, began to stand up, the way a man stands up when somebody enters a room and he has been raised to.
