The Secret Place
The death, the nine years, the twelfth of February, Otisville — all of it belonged to a twenty-six-year-old who had been handed a lie by her mother and had never found the door out.
I could put my hands on that.
I had been, eleven days earlier, working on it.
Seven weeks belonged to a woman of thirty-eight with a daughter, who had all of the information and simply did not want the afternoon.
I said, “Okay,” and I stood up, and I said it in a completely normal voice, and Ilse Vandergraaf later told me that in nineteen years she had never seen a marriage end more quietly.
What I have never told anybody, and am putting here because this account is worth nothing if I leave it out, is that in the four seconds before she answered I had been hoping she would lie.
