The Shawnee were the core, but the Potawatomi, Kickapoo, Winnebago, Ottawa, and other nations were all represented.

The community had its own council house, its own system of governance, its own ceremonies.

The settlement also represented an experiment in Indigenous self-governance that Tecumseh was watching carefully.

Could people from many different nations, with different languages and different traditions, live together in a functioning community?

Could they coordinate decisions, manage conflicts, and act collectively?

Prophetstown was the test of whether the political idea of pan-Indian confederation could become practical reality.

The answer, while the settlement lasted, was at least partially yes.
