The British retreat up the Thames River in October 1813 put Tecumseh in an impossible position.

His warriors were committed to fighting.

Abandoning the British now, in the middle of a retreat, meant losing whatever support they had provided and facing the Americans alone and in the open without defensive position.

Staying with the British meant retreating from the territory they had been fighting to defend, moving further from their homelands.
