Bracken,” he said, “choose your next words with exceptional care.” For the first time that morning, my son stopped smiling.
I watched it happen — watched the certainty drain out of his face and something colder move in behind it.
He had walked in believing he was the hunter.
He was beginning, dimly, to suspect he had walked into a room built by the person he thought he had cornered.
I knew that particular fear, though I had only ever watched it from the outside, on the faces of the guilty when a case they thought was airtight begins to hiss.
