Chapter 3 — The Locks

Three weeks later, they changed the locks.

I spent that night in a motel while my own son posted photographs from my living room — drinking my husband’s bourbon beneath the portrait of our wedding day.

At midnight he texted me one sentence: Stop making this difficult. He had always mistaken my patience for surrender, and grief had made that mistake easier for him to believe.

I did not text back.

I had learned, a long time before Sheldon was born, that the worst thing you can do to a man who is building a case against himself is interrupt him.
