A family is broken long before that, in silence, on the day everyone agrees to know and not say, and hands the smallest and most defenseless person among them the job of keeping the secret so the adults can stay comfortable.

That is the break.

We did not cause it.

We only, at last, refused to keep paying for it.

What we lost was a family that had demanded our silence as the price of belonging.

What my brother and I found on the other side of that loss was smaller and quieter and real — and what our children have now, that we never did, is the simple, unremarkable, world-changing certainty that if they ever need to say a hard true thing, the adults who love them will believe them, and will not, under any circumstances, ask them to keep it to themselves.

THE END.
