The Sixteen Seconds
Simone did her six months and came out in the August of the second year and began supervised visitation again in the October, two hours every other Saturday, at a facility in Nacogdoches with a monitor in the room and a form to fill out.
She did fifty-one of those before anything changed.
I want to give her that properly, because I have given her very little else.
Fifty-one Saturdays, two hours, in a room with a stranger taking notes, driving an hour and forty minutes each way from where she lives now, for two years, on a probation that says she cannot be alone with her own daughter.
She has not missed one.
