The Sixteen Seconds
It was the worst second of my life and I was about four seconds from being down there and I couldn’t stand what I was seeing for four more seconds, so I shut it.
“And that’s not a good reason, and I’m not going to dress it up for you.
I’ve had five years to find a better one and there isn’t one.
“But baby, I need you to know that the curtain isn’t the thing.
I know it’s the thing you remember and I know why.
The thing is what I did for the next six hours, and that wasn’t a second, and I did all of it awake.”
Wren was quiet in the car for a long time.
