The Sixteen Seconds
That is all it took.
Not a fortune and not a soldier and not a reckoning.
Two phone calls and a box.
Everything else — the Rangers, the special prosecutor, the nineteen months, the twelve years and the twenty years and the four point one million dollars — all of it ran downhill from a girl at a window who did something instead of watching, and a doctor who did the paperwork properly at eleven fifty-six at night on a Saturday.
I was eleven hundred miles away in the California desert and I could not do one single thing, and the thing that saved my daughter’s life was other people’s ordinary courage on a Saturday afternoon in a county I no longer live in.
I think about that most days.
Then I go and stand in a hallway for a minute, and then I go to bed.
