Imani Boateng is a pediatric orthopedic trauma surgeon and she was the attending who took my daughter into an operating room at 1:38 on the Sunday morning, and she sat down with me at eleven o’clock on the Monday in a small room with a box of tissues on the table that I did not use.

She did not use soft language and I have thanked her for it since.

She said: “I’m going to explain what happened to her leg, and then I’m going to explain what the delay did, and I want to do it in that order.”

What happened to the leg was a tibia and fibula fracture and a crush injury to the muscle compartments of the lower leg.

Both of those are, by themselves, survivable, fixable, ordinary.
