The Smell of a Hard Shift
“I’m taking you to Grandma’s.
Right now.”
“Is Mom okay?” His eyes were wide.
“Mom’s going to be fine,” I said.
“I’m going to go get her.” I dropped him at my mother’s without a real explanation, waving off her questions, and drove toward downtown Portland faster than I should have, the address burned behind my eyes.
I told myself I was going to save her.
