It’s the smell.

A hard shift gets into my hair, under my nails — it smells like copper, like rust, like the worst day of someone’s life.

And I could not walk into our house carrying that smell and put my arms around Colm.

I couldn’t let my son breathe that in.

So I sat in the car.

I cried until I could breathe again.
