The next day, with Bethany at the hospital and Colm at school, I did something I had never done in eleven years.
I went into the garage and searched her car.
The glove box was ordinary.
Then I reached under the passenger seat and my fingers found crinkling plastic — a crumpled, opaque shopping bag.
Inside was a light-blue scrub top, and near the collar was a dark smear of dried, rusted brown.
