Every small recovery was a private miracle that only the two of us knew about, celebrated in silence, hidden from the whole rest of the house, and we guarded the secret of it as carefully as we guarded everything else, because we both understood, without needing to say it, that if the wrong person learned Raymond Winslow was coming back to life, they would only try harder to end it.
Chapter 12 — The Hidden Phone
“There is a phone,” Raymond told me one morning before the sun was up, his voice stronger now than it had been, though still low and careful.
“In the bottom drawer of my desk, behind the old files.
No one in this house knows it is there.”
I went and found it where he said, a small device tucked away behind a stack of yellowing papers, forgotten by everyone but him.
He had kept it, I understood, precisely for a day like this one, some part of him having sensed, even before he fully knew, that he might one day need a line to the outside world that no one could cut.
