Chapter 16 — I Had a Son
When I had finished, Raymond was quiet for a long moment.
Then he asked me to bring him the baby.
I lifted my sleeping boy and settled him carefully into the crook of Raymond’s left arm, which was strong enough now to hold him, and Raymond looked down at the small sleeping face, and he began, at last, to tell me the thing he had been circling for days.
“Nora,” he said softly, “I had a son, a long time ago.” I stared at him, certain I had misheard.
