For two secret nights I had watched Raymond drive his weakened body up out of that bed, forcing his legs to remember how to bear his weight, gripping the furniture, sweating and shaking and refusing to quit, teaching himself to walk again in stolen hours while the house slept.

He had done it for this, for a moment he could not yet be sure would even come, so that if his rescue ever arrived he would be able to meet it standing.

And now his rescue had arrived, and I heard those slow heavy thumps and I knew that the man everyone in this house had written off as a corpse was, at that very moment, dragging himself upright to walk down and prove them all wrong.
