The Son Who Stayed
It began with the worst thing I ever did, a lie I agreed to out of desperation, a counterfeit son sent to keep a lonely woman quiet.
And it turned, through no cleverness of mine, through nothing but an old woman’s refusal to be anything other than exactly who she was, into the best thing that ever happened to me.
I did not deserve Nora.
I have made my peace with that.
You do not always get what you deserve in this life; sometimes, if you are very lucky, you get something far better than you deserve, handed to you by someone who decided to love you for reasons you will never fully understand.
All I can do with a gift like that is try to be worthy of it going forward, to be for my own mother the kind of son Nora saw in me before I could see it in myself, and to remember, every single day, the two lines she left on the back of a photograph.
The son I was given didn’t care.
The son who stayed gave me everything.
I intend to keep staying, for the rest of my life, for everyone I love.
It is the only thanks she ever wanted, and the only thanks worth giving.
