There came an afternoon, months in, when she was clearer than I had ever seen her.
Some days the fog lifted for a while, and on this day it lifted completely, and she looked at me across the small space between our chairs with eyes that were calm and lucid and entirely present, and she seemed to be looking not at whoever she sometimes thought I was, but at me.
“You’re a good man,” she said.
