Chapter 17 — She Knew the Whole Time

I stood up.

My legs were not entirely steady, but I stood, and I folded Nora’s letter carefully along its worn creases and slipped the check into the inside pocket of my jacket, over my heart, where I could feel it against my chest.

The director gave me a small nod, and there was something in her eyes that looked almost like pride.

I walked toward the door, which meant walking past Arthur Vance, who stood rooted in the middle of the office with his two silent attorneys, watching me the whole way with that poisoned stare.
