I want to tell you what that money did, because it did not do what people imagine money does.

It did not buy me a fast car or a life of ease.

It did something both smaller and infinitely larger than that.

It gave me back my mother.

The first thing I did, before anything else, was pay off every last hospital bill.

I sat at my kitchen table with the whole terrible stack of them, the invoices and the collection notices and the second notices and the final demands, and one by one I paid them, watched the balances go to zero, watched the walls that had been closing in on us for years simply dissolve.

I do not think anyone who has not lived under that particular kind of debt can fully understand what it does to a person, how it gets into everything, how it colors every ordinary hour.
