Hugo, older by minutes, took the trophy.
They did not look at the cameras or the sponsors.
In perfect unison they turned their heads and looked up at the tier across from me — at Coraline.
She stood.
She did not cheer or wave or reach for any credit.
She simply put a hand over her heart and smiled at them, a smile so pure and so full of aching pride that it broke something in my chest — a bond between a mother and her sons crackling in the air, a sacred circle my billions could never have bought a place inside.
I had sat through a thousand transactions in my life, watched a thousand people want things from each other and calculate how to get them, and I had come to believe, without ever quite admitting it, that this was all human beings ever really did — want, and calculate, and take.
