Chapter 11 — Standing Up
“She didn’t fall because of the house,” I said.
Sherry turned to look at me like she’d forgotten I was a person.
“She fell carrying my laundry up the stairs because she’d decided I was working too hard.
She fell doing something kind.
That’s not a woman who can’t manage.
That’s a woman nobody’s paying enough attention to for her to have to.”
I should not have said it; it was not my family and not my place.
