He genuinely believed I would be back.
He believed it because in nine years of marriage he had never once seen me refuse him anything that mattered, had never seen me hold a line, and had concluded from my endless accommodation that I was a person without lines to hold.

And so he laughed, gently, at the exact moment his wife was deciding, with total clarity, to end him — and he did not even hear the door close, because it had never occurred to him that a woman he had trained to yield might have a room inside her he had never been allowed into, with a lock he did not hold the key to.
