Two hours old.

Still damp at the hairline, still curled into herself the way a baby curls when she trusts the world because no one has taught her not to.

“My family knows,” Beau went on.

“They’ve met him.

There are expectations I can’t ignore.” I did not scream.

I did not weep.

I only held her, and I made myself hear the rest of it, because I had learned that afternoon that the most important thing I could do was listen carefully to exactly what this man was willing to say out loud.

I have thought a great deal about why I didn’t cry, because people who hear this story always expect that I did, and are almost disappointed when I tell them I didn’t.
