That does not make the knowledge false.

It makes the context essential.

Ishi was demonstrating real skills.

He was identifying real places.

He was preserving real information.

But he was doing so under conditions created by the collapse of the community in which those skills had once been ordinary.

The 1914 trip may have been invaluable to anthropology.

It also required Ishi to revisit a landscape of trauma so the institution could document what had survived inside his memory.
