The Table They Sent Us To
The foundation, restructured under new oversight with none of the old family anywhere near it, resumed doing the thing it had always claimed to do — inhalers and insulin and clinic equipment reaching the families who needed them.
Somewhere there are children breathing easier who will never know that for three years the fund meant to help them was quietly feeding a gambling habit and a taste for handbags, and who will never know that it was set right because a nine-year-old was pushed to a table behind a pillar and his father decided he was finally done being quiet.
There is a strange grace in that chain of events, and I hold onto it.
The cruelty aimed at my kids was the thread that, pulled, unraveled a theft from other people’s kids.
My children’s dignity and those clinic children’s medicine turned out to be the same fight.
I did not plan it that way.
