A heavy banging shook the apartment door.

Santiago looked up from the torn pieces of his letter.

Griselda smiled — a small, satisfied smile that frightened him more than any of her shouting ever had.

“They’ve come for you,” she said.

And Santiago, seventeen years old, soaked and bruised and clutching the ruins of the best thing that had ever happened to him, did not yet know that a few miles away his grandfather had just learned his name — and that the race between the man coming to save him and the woman trying to erase him had already begun.
