The After-Image Of The Canyon

There is a scene that appears in no primary source but that the sources imply: the view from the canyon rim, looking down at the canyon floor, after the burning had been done.

The lodges were fire.

The supply stocks were fire.

The horses were gone — driven south, to be shot later.

The soldiers were withdrawing.

The families who had escaped were somewhere in the canyon system or on the plains above, looking back at the smoke.

What they saw was not primarily a military defeat.
