The Texas Historical Commission marker says 1,400 were captured.

Some number of horses escaped with the families who fled the canyon, or scattered into the canyon system during the chaos of the battle.

The people who reached the agencies through the winter and spring of 1874-1875 were not entirely without horses — the marker says they had lost “half their horses,” implying that approximately half of the original horse wealth of the encampment survived in the hands of the families who fled.

Half, if taken literally, means the remaining half was with the people who escaped.
