What Was Burned

Start with the lodges and the food.

The tipis of the Southern Plains peoples were not improvised shelters.

They were engineered structures, each one representing the labor of multiple women over weeks or months.

A single tipi required somewhere between ten and twenty buffalo hides, carefully tanned, cut, and sewn together in a specific pattern.

The poles — typically fifteen to twenty-five per lodge — had to be cut, stripped, and dragged from distant timber areas.

The design and construction of a lodge was specialized knowledge passed from mother to daughter, and a well-constructed tipi was warm, weatherproof, and designed to shed rain and snow.
