The Texas Canyon Battle Where U.S. Cavalry Captured 1,400 Native Horses — Then Destroyed About 1,000 Of Them
The physical landscape where the battle occurred is preserved.
The people whose lives were shaped by what happened there are represented today by the Comanche Nation, the Kiowa Tribe, the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes, and the other nations whose ancestors fled across the Palo Duro canyon floor in September 1874.
The battle is also commemorated in the TEXAS outdoor musical drama, performed at the canyon annually, though that production is a different kind of telling.
