Mackenzie’s Later Career
Ranald Mackenzie did not remain on the Southern Plains after the Red River War.
His career continued with operations against the Sioux and Northern Cheyenne in the aftermath of the Little Bighorn, and later against the Apache in the Southwest.
He suffered increasingly from what historians have identified as possible psychiatric illness — likely exacerbated by head wounds sustained in the Civil War and by the physical and psychological demands of decades of active service.
By the mid-1880s, his behavior had become erratic enough that he was retired from active duty.
