The Truth I Carried Home
How do you explain that the man who had been a shadow over your whole life was, in truth, someone brave and gifted and good, and that the world had not been kind to people who were brave?
I knelt down in front of her so that we were eye to eye.
“Julian was someone very special,” I said gently.
“He was one of the kindest people I ever knew.
He cared about other people, about strangers, about doing what was right even when it was dangerous.
There was something terrible happening here, a long time ago, and Julian was trying to stop it.
He was trying to keep people safe.”
