But I had long ago learned how to keep all of that off my face and out of my voice when Grace needed me to, how to be the still surface over the churning water, and I did it now, kneeling in front of her, giving her the enormous truth of her father in a voice as gentle and unshaken as I could make it, because that steadiness was the gift only I could give her in that moment, and I was determined to give it.

Chapter 12 — Was He My Dad

Grace searched my face, and I watched her arrive at the question before she asked it.

“Was he my dad?” she said.

The room went utterly silent.

I had imagined this moment more times than I could count over the years, had pictured a hundred versions of it, some where I was calm and some where I wept, and in none of them had my parents been sitting behind us, undone by the same words.

“Yes,” I whispered.
