Chapter 18 — His Own Signature

It was a scanned witness statement, dated three weeks before the night my father threw me out of the house.

It described, in plain and careful language, the movement of drums of chemical waste out of the plant under cover of darkness, the overnight shipments no one was supposed to ask about.

And at the bottom of it, in ink, was my father’s signature.

His breath caught violently in his chest.
