The Truth I Carried Home
I stood and watched them, my father and my daughter, and I let myself cry for the first time since I had walked back onto that porch.
Ten years of it came up out of me, the fear and the exhaustion and the loneliness and the grief for Julian and the terrible ache of a family I had believed was gone for good.
And underneath all of it, rising slowly, was something I had not felt in a very long time, something I had almost forgotten the shape of.
It was relief.
