The Two Extra Seats
He came in at ten past one.
He turned on the light over the sink and saw me sitting at the table and physically startled.
“Jesus. Hannah. You scared me.”
I said: “What’s your son’s name?”
I have never seen a human face do what my husband’s face did in that kitchen.
It was not guilt exactly.
It was more like watching somebody’s whole architecture come down floor by floor while they stand in it.
He sat down.
