The Two Extra Seats
I had slept about six hours in two nights and I was wearing my sister’s sweatshirt.
Gertrude did not apologize.
I had spent all of Sunday privately rehearsing what I would say when she apologized, and she did not apologize, and it turns out I had no material at all for the other outcome.
What she said was: “Logan has a right to be a father to that boy.”
“I have never said otherwise.”
“That child needs a proper family.”
“Meaning what, Gertrude?”
