The Vessel
Priya laid the evidence out like a prosecutor. My hospital records. The police report describing Walter’s strike. The transcript of my mother’s 911 call, and sworn affidavits from the arresting officers documenting Lorraine’s total absence of remorse.
Judge Whitfield looked over her glasses at Corey.
“Mr. Whitman. Your mother ordered a physical assault on your heavily pregnant wife. Your stepfather carried it out. You stood there and did nothing. You are not capable of protecting this child from the danger your family represents.”
The gavel came down. I was granted full legal and physical custody. Corey was reduced to supervised visitation at a neutral facility. The judge divided our joint accounts, weighting our modest savings toward me to help with relocation.
It didn’t feel like winning. There was no triumph in that courtroom. It felt like walking out of a burning building — exhausting and painful, and survival.
