Some farms were on higher ground; others depended on low coastal areas.

The significance may have been indirect: altered shorelines, changing wetlands, erosion, access to landing places, or loss of useful pasture.

Environmental stress is often strongest not when a landscape disappears, but when a landscape becomes just a little less productive than it used to be.
