The Voice She Thought She’d Lost
“That is a lie, all of it,” Gavin sputtered.
“Every word of it is true,” my mother said, not looking at him, looking at the officers.
“They’re filling your head with nonsense, Brenda!” he shouted.
And my mother turned and looked at him then, finally, directly, and said the thing that I think was the truest sentence spoken on that porch all day.
“No, Gavin.
What happened is that I started thinking for myself again.” I do not think I will ever forget the sound of my mother’s voice saying that sentence, because of everything that was inside it.
For months she had been told, in a hundred spoken and unspoken ways, that she could not think for herself, that her judgment was faulty, that she needed him to decide things for her, that without him she was nothing.
