The Voice She Thought She’d Lost
My mother did not answer.
She looked down at her hands in her lap and she said nothing at all, and the silence that followed told me more than any confession could have.
This was not a disagreement.
This was a woman who had learned, through some process I had not been present to witness, that the safest thing to do when that tone entered her husband’s voice was to become very small and very quiet and wait for it to pass.
I sat at that table with a polite expression on my face and felt something dark and clear and very old turn over inside me.
