I had a choice, in that kitchen, between the loud satisfaction of telling Gavin exactly what I thought of him, which would have warned him and changed nothing, and the quiet, unsatisfying discipline of letting him win the moment so that I could win the war.

I chose the second.

And I drove home to begin.
